Report: Lancet Commission Examines the 'Global Syndemic': The Interplay of Obesity, Undernutrition & Climate Change, Co-Chaired by Bill Dietz

June 7, 2019

The Global Syndemic represents the paramount health challenge for humans, the environment, and our planet in the 21st century.

On January 27th, 2019, the Lancet Commission on the Global Syndemic of Obesity, Undernutrition and Climate Change released its report and policy brief. These publications were the culmination of a three year effort co-chaired by Bill Dietz, chair of the Redstone Center, and Boyd Swinburn of University of Auckland in New Zealand. The Commission identifies the 'Global Syndemic' as the interacting pandemics of obesity, undernutrition and climate change, which are linked by common drivers and shared solutions. Drivers include food and agriculture, transportation, urban design and land use systems - all of which are underpinned by policies and economic incentives that promote overconsumption and inequalities. Among the Commission's recommendations are double- and triple-duty actions that can influence multiple parts of the Syndemic simultaneously, as well as a Framework Convention on Food Systems modeled after global treaties on tobacco and climate change.
