The Lancet Commission on Obesity - Second Convening

June 3, 2019

The Global Syndemic represents the paramount health challenge for humans, the environment, and our planet in the 21st century.

On October 18 – 20, 2016, the Redstone Center hosted the second multi-day convening of The Lancet Commission on Obesity (LCO). Bill Dietz is co-chair of the international commission, along with Boyd Swinburn, professor of population nutrition and global health at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. Assistant Professor Michael Long is a fellow on the commission. At this second convening, the commission continued to map the interplay of existing systems affecting obesity, undernutrition and climate change, and established several promising strategies to develop a comprehensive understanding of the systemic causes and solutions. The commission consists of 23 commissioners and 15 fellows from multiple countries and disciplines. The LCO was established following two successful Lancet Series on Obesity. The initial deliverable for the commission is the publication of a substantive foundation paper in Lancet in 2018.
