The Lancet Commission on Obesity - First Convening

June 3, 2019

The Global Syndemic represents the paramount health challenge for humans, the environment, and our planet in the 21st century.

On February 16th - 18th, 2016, the Redstone Center hosted a multi-day inaugural convening of The Lancet Commission on Obesity. Bill Dietz is co-chair of the international Commission along with Boyd Swinburn, Professor of Population Nutrition and Global Health at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. At the first convening, the Commission began to map the interplay of existing systems affecting obesity, undernutrition and climate change, and established several promising strategies to develop a comprehensive understanding of the systemic causes and solutions. The Commission consists of 23 Commissioners from 14 countries representing 22 disciplines and was established following two successful Lancet Series on Obesity. The initial deliverable for the Commission is the publication of a substantive foundation paper in Lancet in early 2018.
