On October 17, 2016, the National Academy of Medicine held a symposium on Reversing the Dramatic, 30-Year Rise in Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes as part of its 46th Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. The symposium featured keynote addresses by Margaret Chan of the World Health Organization, who presented a global perspective on obesity and type 2 diabetes, and Bill Dietz of the Redstone Center, who examine and described U.S. patterns and disparities. The event will also features panel discussions on the drivers of these conditions, promising clinical interventions, and population-level strategies moderated by Griffin P. Rodgers of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, Sam Klein of the Center for Human Nutrition at Washington University in St. Louis, and Risa Lavizzo-Mourey of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The day will conclude with a special forum on “Vital Directions for Health and Health Care,” featuring Francis Collins, Tom Daschle, Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, Mike Leavitt, and Mark McClellan.
